IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay: Government

In today’s world, there is a significant concern regarding the unhealthy food choices people make. While some believe that the government should subsidize healthy food options to make them more affordable, others argue that imposing taxes on unhealthy food is a better solution. This essay will explore both views and provide an opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, those who believe that the government should subsidize food and vegetables argue that healthy food is often more expensive than junk food. This makes it difficult for low-income families to buy healthy food options, leading them to choose cheaper, less nutritious alternatives. Subsidies can encourage healthy eating habits and make healthy food more affordable for everyone, regardless of their income.

On the other hand, supporters of imposing taxes on unhealthy food argue that this will not only increase government revenue but also discourage people from consuming unhealthy foods. Taxes can make unhealthy foods less affordable and incentivize people to choose healthier options, which could ultimately lead to a decrease in obesity and other related health issues.

In my opinion, both views have their merits. However, I believe that imposing taxes on unhealthy foods is a more effective solution. Subsidies may make healthy food more affordable, but they do not necessarily discourage people from consuming unhealthy foods. Taxation, on the other hand, provides a financial disincentive to consume unhealthy foods, which could lead to a decrease in obesity rates and other health issues.

In conclusion, there are arguments for both subsidizing healthy food and imposing taxes on unhealthy food. While subsidies may make healthy food more affordable, taxation can discourage people from consuming unhealthy foods, ultimately leading to better health outcomes. It is up to governments to determine the most effective solution to promote healthy eating habits among their citizens.
