This article will help you understand the requirements for IELTS Writing task 2 introduction – Essay and will provide specific example sentences that I encourage my students to use when writing the IELTS Writing task 2 introduction.

The introduction is the first part of the essay that the examiners check and should give them the most positive first impression of what to expect in the rest of the assignment.

In the same way as when meeting a person, the first impression of reading the introduction is always remembered by the reviewers.

I often tell my students that a bad introduction to the IELTS essay written in part 2 is the same as if you took the oral part of IELTS and were rude to the examiner at the very beginning – no matter how good you are in the rest of the exam, the examiner will not be favorable to you and will definitely lower your final grade.

TYPICAL MISTAKES IN IELTS Writing task 2 introduction

1. TOO GENERAL IELTS Writing task 2 introduction

Most of these essays start with “Nowadays……” or “In modern life….” followed by some general information about the topic. In my opinion, this is the worst start you can make. Remember that you are supposed to be answering the question, not writing about the topic at all.

2. THE ABSENCE OF YOUR PERSONAL OPINION / STATEMENT ON THE ESSAY QUESTION
(THESIS STATEMENT)

This is the most important sentence in the essay. Its absence automatically leads to the loss of a significant number of points in the assessment. I will tell you more about this below. Personal opinion should be available in IELTS Writing task 2 introduction.

3. NO INDICATION OF WHAT AND HOW YOU ARE GOING TO DISCUSS IN THE ESSAY
(OUTLINE)

If you do not include a sentence in the introduction that outlines what you want to write about in your essay, then the examiner, of course, will not know about it either. And this will also result in a loss of points in your final grade. Below I will show you how to write this sentence correctly.

4. TRYING TO “HOOK” THE READER OR STICK TO AN ENTERTAINING, LIGHT STYLE

Remember that this is an IELTS exam, not a university essay. There are no extra points here for the fact that the essay is, to a certain extent, “interesting”. Rather the opposite. Ironically, a “boring” essay will help you score higher. For the same reason, avoid overly ornate language.

5. USE AN INFORMAL STYLE

Know your audience. You must write in an academic style. It is indespensable to use informal style and write in a communication way and make your IELTS Writing task 2 introduction easy to read and understand.

GOOD IELTS Writing task 2 introduction

Rising global temperatures and human health and fitness issues are often viewed as being caused by the expanding use of automobiles. This essay agrees that increasing use of motor vehicles is contributing to rising global temperatures and certain health issues. Firstly, this essay will discuss the production of greenhouse gases by vehicles and secondly, it will discuss other toxic chemicals released by internal combustion engines.

BAD IELTS Writing task 2 introduction

Nowadays, cars are a very popular way of getting around. Day by day many more people drive cars around but others feel that they cause global warming. Global warming is one of the most serious issues in modern life. They also affect people’s health and well-being which is also a serious issue.

Obviously, a bad example is shown by the introduction, which, firstly, talks about the topic under discussion too generally. Secondly, in this introduction, there is only a copy of words and phrases from the title of the topic, however, both THESIS STATEMENT and OUTLNE are absent.

If your intro looks something like this, don’t worry. Most of my students write it in this style. Further familiarity with the rules for writing an introduction helps them correct these mistakes and write very competent and highly appreciated papers by the examiners.

STRUCTURE OF IELTS Writing task 2 introduction (Introductory part)

If you use the IELTS Writing Part 2 Introductory Structure that I suggest, you will not only get a higher grade, but you can also save time on the exam. Also, if you practice writing this part of the essay more often, it will become much easier for you, and you will be able to complete this task much faster. This, in turn, will give you extra time to focus on the body paragraphs of the essay and end up with a significantly higher score.

The introductory part of the IELTS Writing 2 essay must contain three sentences, and these three sentences must be:
  1. Paraphrase of the main question of the topic.
  2. Your position/statement (THESIS STATEMENT)
  3. General outline/outline essay (OUTLNE STATEMENT)

Nothing else is required. As you can see, everything is quite simple! Let’s now look at each proposal in more detail. 

1. PARAPHRASE OF THE MAIN QUESTION OF THE TOPIC

Paraphrasing means repeating a question, but in other words, so that it has the same meaning. We do this by using synonyms and changing the order of the sentences.

Question: There is a good deal of evidence that increasing car use is contributing to global warming and having other undesirable effects on people’s health and well-being.

Paraphrase: Rising global temperatures and human health and fitness issues are often viewed as being caused by the expanding use of automobiles.

The synonyms I’ve used are:

  • Increasing – expanding
  • Car use – use of automobiles
  • Global warming – rising global temperatures
  • People’s health and well-being – human health and fitness

Also, you can see that I then reversed the order of the simple sentences.

By making these changes, you will be able to demonstrate to the examiner that you can not only paraphrase, but also demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary. These are the two elements that the examiner specifically expects to see in your essay, and you will receive marks accordingly for using them.

You should definitely practice this skill repeatedly before the exam.

2. YOUR POSITION/STATEMENT (THESIS STATEMENT)

This is the most important sentence in your essay. This is your main idea, and I often describe it to students as your attitude to the whole problem under discussion, formulated in one sentence. This tells the examiner that you have understood the main point of the essay and that it will be clear and coherent.

Let’s look at the thesis proposal from the previous example:

Thesis statement: This essay agrees that increasing use of motor vehicles is contributing to rising global temperatures and certain health issues.

It’s always just one sentence, so you’ll have to practice summarizing your opinion in one sentence. It should also consider micro-keywords rather than the topic as a whole.

You should start this sentence like this:

This essay agrees that/I agree that….. or this essay disagrees that/I disagree that….. (Opinion essays)

The main cause(s) of this issue is….. (Causes and solutions)

The principal advantage(s) is (xxxxx) and the main disadvantage is (xxxxxx). (Advantage and disadvantages).

For an essay in the Discussion/Two points of view format, both points of view should be clearly indicated.

For example: Some aspects of celebrity culture have a bad influence on young people.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

To simplify our task, let’s limit ourselves to two possible options:

  1. Agree that some aspects of celebrity culture have a bad influence on young people.
  2. Disagree that some aspects of celebrity culture have a bad influence on young people.

Let’s say in my essay I claim that celebrity culture is a bad influence, then my statement in the thesis would be:

This essay agrees/I agree that some famous people’s lifestyles have a detrimental effect on the youth of today.

I stated my opinion in one sentence and used synonyms to show that I’m not just copying the question.

Your statement in the thesis is very important, but only in those essay topics that ask for your opinion. Some IELTS topics do not require you to express your opinion, in which case you may choose not to.

3. GENERAL OUTLINE/OUTLINE ESSAY (OUTLNE STATEMENT)

Now that you have rephrased the question and told the examiner what you think in your thesis, you will outline what you want to discuss in the paragraphs of the body of the essay. In other words, you will tell the examiner what they will read in the rest of the essay. This too should be expressed in only one sentence.

Example: Question: There is a good deal of evidence that increasing car use is contributing to global warming and having other undesirable effects on people’s health and well-being.

Outline statement: (Firstly), This essay will discuss the production of greenhouse gases by vehicles and (secondly), it will discuss other toxic chemicals released by internal combustion engines.

So, I just outlined the content of the two main paragraphs, writing about what they contain. You should only have one main idea for each paragraph. In this essay, I have only two paragraphs that provide arguments to support my thesis, so here I only need to talk about two questions in the description of the essay outline.

  • Main body paragraph 1 – production of greenhouse gases by cars.
  • Main body paragraph 2 – toxic chemical produced by car engines.

Again, each of the paragraphs in the body of the essay should only have one main idea, so it should be easy to identify them and then write a sentence about them.

As for the Advantages and Disadvantages essays and the Problem and Solution essays, you can write something like this:

Advantages and disadvantages:
This essay will first discuss the (main advantage(s)) followed by an analysis of the (main disadvantage(s)).

Problem and Solution:
This essay will analyse the principal problem(s) and offer solutions to this issue.

Example:

Question: Learning to manage money is one of the key aspects to adult life. How in your view can individuals best learn to manage their money?

Good answer: One of the keys to adulthood is appreciating how to budget your finances. It is clear that the best way someone can learn this, is by managing money during childhood. This essay will discuss the importance of parental involvement during childhood and look at the importance of having a part time job during this time period.

As you can see, this introduction clearly follows the structure outlined above.
