Paraphrasing is an important IELTS skill. This article will tell you how to learn how to paraphrase effectively.

Paraphrasing is simply rewriting a phrase or sentence to have the same meaning but using different words. Paraphrasing is one of the most important skills to learn before taking an IELTS test. This skill is most important for the quality of the written part of the exam, but it will also come in handy in the oral answer, as well as in the reading and listening tests. In other words, if you know how to paraphrase, you are more likely to get a much higher score.

The analytical thinking required to paraphrase will also help you get the question right, and this is the reason I always tell my students to start their written test answers by paraphrasing the topic question.

Let’s look at this with a specific example to Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

Orignal: Paraphrasing is one of the most important skills to learn before doing your IELTS test.

Paraphrased: Prior to taking the IELTS test, mastering paraphrasing is one of the most crucial things to do.

Obviously, the second sentence (paraphrase) uses synonyms to change some words (for example, “important” instead of “crucial” and “prior” instead of “before”, and also changes the grammatical construction (for example, ” Parabrasing is one of the most important skills ” instead of ” mastering paraphrasing ” ). You can also change the word order in a sentence.

Below are the three main methods to use for paraphrasing sentences when taking IELTS written test items. Ideally you should try to use all three, but sometimes only two will be possible.

Now we will look at each method in detail, and also talk about using the passive voice when doing a paraphrase.

Method 1: USING SYNONYMS to Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

Synonyms are different words that have the same meaning. For example, “humans” is synonymous with “people” and “attractive” is synonymous with “beautiful”. This method simply changes words with the same meaning to create a new sentence.

For example: Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

My car needs petrol.

My vehicle requires fuel.

As you can see, I replaced 3 of the four words with synonyms to create a new sentence with the same meaning as the first one. You will notice that I have not replaced all the words, but you should try to replace most of them.

This is the most common method used by students and can be used effectively, but you must be careful. The biggest mistake students make is to paraphrase using a word that is similar in meaning but not synonymous. Such word substitutions change the meaning of the original sentence and lead to a lower score. Let’s look at some examples of bad paraphrasing due to the use of similar words that are not synonymous.

Violent crime is on the rise among teenagers.

Violent offences are rising among young people.

In this example, the word “teenagers” has been replaced with the word “young people”. These are similar words, and adolescents are, of course, young people; however, children and young people between the ages of 18 and 30 can also be described as young people. A more appropriate word here would be “adolescents” or “young people between the ages of 13-19”. A better way to rephrase this sentence would be:

Violent offences are rising among adolescents.

Therefore, you should use only those words in the meaning of which you are 100% sure. Don’t change a word unless you’re completely sure it’s a direct synonym, or you could make a mistake and lower your score.

Let’s look at another example:

Global warming is mostly caused by emissions from internal combustion engines.

Climate change is mainly caused by the release of fumes from motor vehicles.

Method 2: CHANGING WORD ORDER to Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

Changing word or Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2 in order also allows us to effectively rephrase a sentence, but again, we have to be careful. When changing word order, be sure to think about how it affects the grammatical part of the sentence. When changing word order, you may need to add or remove a word, or change the form of a word.

The so-called “Rule of 100%” applies here again; don’t change word order unless you’re 100% sure the new sentence is grammatically correct. Remember that the IELTS exam evaluates your ability to build error-free sentences, as well as use a variety of grammatical structures.

Fortunately, there are two easy ways to change the word order in most IELTS questions.

(1) You can easily reorder simple sentences if the original sentence has more than one simple sentence.

We can also add some synonyms to paraphrase the original sentence even further:

(2) You can also change the word order if the question contains an adjective or a noun. You do this by simply changing the adjective into a subordinate clause.

Orignal: Learning to manage money is one of the key aspects to adult life.

Paraphrase using a subordinate clause: Learning to manage money is one of the aspects to adult life that is key.

Method 3: CHANGING THE FORM OF THE WORD to Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

There are several different word forms, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Changing the form of a word also allows us to effectively paraphrase . Again, don’t just change the form of a word; you always need to make sure that your changes do not affect the grammatical meaning of the sentence. You may also need to change a few other words in the sentence to avoid misunderstandings.

Original offer: Longer life spans and improvements in the health of older people suggest that people over the age of sixty-five can continue to live full and active lives.

Paraphrase with a change in the grammatical form of words: Longer life spans and improvements in the health of older people are suggesting that people over the age of sixty-five can continue living full and active lives.

Method 4: TRANSITION FROM ACTIVE TO PASSIVE to Paraphrase IELTS Writing task 2

The passive voice is often used in academic writing and can therefore be used in an academic format IELTS test. Only verbs with an object can be made passive.

Active voice: The property developers invested $20 million in the development of the shopping centre.

Passive voice: $20 million was invested in the development of shopping centre.

We often use the passive voice in academic writing when we don’t want to say that it is our opinion.

Orignal: People say that global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Paraphrased: Global warming is said to be caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

How many of these methods should I use?

All four of these methods can be used independently or together. I advise my students to try to change the grammar (word order and/or word form) and use synonyms.

Remember that you should only use methods that you really know how to use, and in which, with 100% confidence, you will not make mistakes.
